Stay Ahead of Winter with Arctic Air Furnace Maintenance

Staying ahead of winter is a lot cheaper than catching up to it. Arctic Air & Plumbing has kept Antelope Valley homes warm for over twenty years, so we know what desert winters do to a furnace. Out here, a furnace sits idle through the warm months and collects dust. Small problems have time to set in, and you don’t notice until the first cold night leans on the whole system. A tune-up catches those problems while it’s still mild out, and keeps the furnace running efficiently. On gas heat, it also includes the safety check that matters most.

A Furnace Tune-Up Is More Than a Filter Swap

A multi-point visit that
leaves your furnace cleaner, safer, and running like new.

When our HVAC technician comes out, the goal is to leave your furnace cleaner and safer than we found it. A furnace has more moving parts than most homeowners realize, so here is the checklist we run on a typical furnace maintenance visit:
  • Inspecting the heat exchanger. On a gas furnace this is the most important safety check. If the heat exchanger cracks, it can let carbon monoxide into the air you breathe.
  • Cleaning and checking the burners. Dust that built up over the off-season keeps the burners from firing cleanly, so the furnace works harder just to keep up.
  • Testing the igniter and flame sensor. These are two of the most common reasons a furnace won’t light, and they are far cheaper to catch now than on a freezing night.
  • Replacing or cleaning the air filter. A clogged filter chokes airflow. That makes the furnace work harder and raises your heating bills.
  • Checking gas pressure and connections. We confirm the furnace is getting the right fuel supply and that every connection is tight.
  • Inspecting the venting. Proper venting is what carries combustion gases safely out of your home.
  • Testing the thermostat and controls. We make sure the furnace cycles correctly and heats to the temperature you actually set.
  • Checking the blower motor and airflow. Good airflow is what lets the furnace heat evenly instead of leaving some rooms cold.
  • Testing for carbon monoxide and running a full cycle. We watch the furnace through a complete heating cycle and confirm it is running safely before we leave.
Whether you call it a furnace or a heater, we service it: gas furnaces, electric furnaces, and heat pumps. We maintain all the major brands, including Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York, Bosch, Rheem, American Standard, Amana, Frigidaire, an more.

Homeowner Upkeep vs. a Professional Furnace Tune-Up

Some furnace maintenance is worth doing yourself between visits. The rest takes tools, training, and a close look at parts you can't safely reach. Here is the split:

Between Visits (You) A Professional Tune-Up (Us)
Change the air filter every month or two through the heating season Inspect the heat exchanger and test for carbon monoxide
Keep the vents and returns clear of furniture and rugs Clean the burners and check gas pressure and connections
Listen for odd noises or smells, and watch for weak or uneven heat Test the igniter, flame sensor, thermostat, and blower motor, then run a full heating cycle

The homeowner basics keep airflow healthy day to day. The annual furnace service is what keeps the parts you can't reach running safely and efficiently. If your system has been neglected and something's already acting up, we also handle furnace repair.

Why Furnace Maintenance Matters More Out Here

Desert heating runs on a stop-and-go rhythm that is hard on a furnace. Out here a system can sit unused for six or seven months, then get asked to run for hours on the first genuinely cold night. That long idle stretch lets dust settle on the burners and heat exchanger, and it gives small problems time to hide.

Then the first cold snap hits. A furnace that sat idle all summer suddenly has to run for hours. That first heavy load is exactly when a worn igniter or a tired blower motor finally gives out. This is why we typically receive a flurry of service calls during this time of the year. A pre-season tune-up heads that off. We clear out the off-season dust and catch worn parts before they fail on a cold night. That is why a tune-up pays off more here than in a milder place, where a furnace runs much of the year and never really sits idle.

The Safety Side of Furnace Maintenance

A gas furnace burns fuel inside your home, so keeping it maintained is partly about keeping it safe. The heat exchanger is the part that separates combustion gases from the air you breathe. If the heat exchanger cracks with age, it can let carbon monoxide into your home. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, which is exactly why a yearly inspection is worthwhile: it catches a problem you can’t see or smell.

During a tune-up we inspect the heat exchanger, burners, and venting, and we test for carbon monoxide. Between visits, a few warning signs are worth knowing. The clearest is a burner flame that burns yellow or orange instead of a steady blue. Soot or streaking around the furnace is another. And in more serious cases, headaches or nausea that appear only when the heat is running are a real red flag. If you notice any of these, shut the furnace off and call us. Note: a working carbon monoxide detector on every floor is an inexpensive way to help keep your family safe.

When to Schedule Your Furnace Tune-Up

The best time for a furnace tune-up is fall, before the first real cold sets in. If the visit turns up a problem, we can fix it on a mild day, instead of on the night your heat quits. For most homes, once a year is the right schedule. If it has been more than a year since your furnace was serviced, or it has never been done, don’t wait for fall. It is worth booking a visit now, especially before you rely on your furnace all winter.

A few signs you are overdue: heat that isn’t keeping up like it used to, longer run times, higher bills for the same comfort, or unusual sounds and smells when the furnace kicks on.

Why Homeowners Choose Arctic Air for Furnace Maintenance

A tune-up is only worth as much as the HVAC technician doing it. Here is what you get with us:

  • A thorough visit, not a quick glance. We clean and inspect the furnace rather than swap a filter and leave.
  • Safety-first on gas heat. We check the heat exchanger, venting, and carbon monoxide, so your furnace is safe as well as warm.
  • Honest, upfront pricing. The price we quote is the price you pay, with no surprises added at the end.
  • Straight answers. If your furnace is in good shape, we will tell you. If something needs attention, we will show you why.
  • Every brand, every system. Gas, electric, or heat pump, we service them all.
  • Over twenty years in the Antelope Valley. We know how High Desert winters and long idle stretches wear on a heating system, and what to look for.

No matter who shows up at your door, if they are wearing the polar bear logo, your furnace is in good hands.

Called @ 4pm with a non emergency repair. My plumbing was completely repaired the very next day. Professional, friendly and a pure delight to work with. In the end I included an annual service. Josh and Jonathan are the best. Being able to trust the work and the people is everything. I understand all the 5 star reviews. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

They just keep getting better! I know it can be difficult in these times to trust companies to truly take care of you, do solid work, all at a fair price, but this company does! Had Joe come out and inspect my A/C unit. He was very thoughtful, complete and accommodating. 5 star is not enough. He gave some great recommendations without any high pressure sales and I am completely happy with adding these features to my home through the best A/C company I have worked with by far. Call them, use them and find trust again! Thank you Joe!

I have used these guys several times and they are great. Highly recommend. Today, Joseph didn't disappoint. He explained everything clearly. Great experience. He warned us about old components that need to be replaced and gave us estimates and the approximate time it takes to complete each job. For HVAC and plumbing I recommend Artic Air.

Jonathan was amazing! I live out of the state so he was in the house without super. He called, texted, and FaceTimed me during work. He took before pictures and provided plenty of videos of his work and sent them to me as things were being fixed. He was very knowledgeable and showed a deep concern for me as the customer. He displayed exceptional customer service and didn’t appear to inflate costs or try to push services that I didn’t need. He was honest and did a great job! Artic Air communicated with me and was able to get my issues resolved within 24 hours of me scheduling the appointment. I would definitely recommend Artic Air and Jonathan specifically!!

I can't say enough about Arctic air! We live way up in the mountains in Tehachapi, and they had no problem coming to our house. They are high-tech, personable, efficient and extremely professional. Both Gabriel and Lazaro were amazing, diagnosed the problem, did some troubleshooting, and took care of everything. They even had recommendations for what to do in the near future. I will not hesitate to call them again or to recommend them fully! Well done guys!!

Miguel was nice but the service itself definitely seemed like a scam. Had I known he wasn’t going to do anything I would have never agreed to pay the $99. He attempted to charge almost $1400 to replace 4 items that cost around $120 for all. He informed me that labor itself was $180. I then asked how much it would be if I aid for the parts separate and just paid the labor. Mind you this was after I paid the $99 and he sent me an invoice that totaled to $522. I don’t see how the labor went up that much when he’s servicing the same parts. This company definitely does not seem like an honest company nor is it reasonable. For that amount I could just buy a new one. I asked for the parts I needed and it literally came out to $120.44 for all 4 parts. I also did review the invoice and there’s no detailed price aside anything. I understand this is a business but this seems beyond unreasonable and a waste a money. I will not be recommending and I hope you learn to do right by your customers.

Our 24 year old wall heater was replaced Dec 22 2025 by Samuel and Miguel. They were on time, finished in shorter time than estimated, clean, professional, and provided lots of answers to our multiple questions.
The gentleman that came out the week before to diagnose the problem gave us same info as the So Cal Gas representative. But, in addition to saying we were fortunate to be alive and should keep the heater pilot off, he came back the next day with a portable heater for our use until new heater could be installed on Monday .
Photos are of clean paper placed from front door to wall heater site
