A water heater usually gets replaced for one of a few reasons: the old tank finally failed, it started leaking, it reached the age where another repair no longer makes sense, or a new water heater is going into a remodel or addition. Whatever brought you here, the goal is the same: the right unit for your home, installed correctly and to code.

Arctic Air & Plumbing installs and replaces tank, tankless, and hybrid heat-pump water heaters throughout Lancaster and the Antelope Valley. Whether it’s a hot water heater replacement for a unit that finally quit or a new installation for a remodel, we size the unit to your household, take care of the permit and code requirements, and give you the price before any work begins. Since 2009, we’ve installed and replaced water heaters across the valley, and we know how the hard water out here affects how long a new one lasts.

Water heater installation and replacement is one of the plumbing services we provide for Lancaster homeowners.

Thinking about a new water heater? Call (661) 214-8018. We answer 24/7.

Water Heaters We Install and Replace

We install and replace the full range of residential water heaters, and help you choose the right one for your home and budget. Our plumbers install:

  • Gas and electric water heaters

  • Standard tank (storage) water heaters

  • Tankless, on-demand water heaters

  • Hybrid heat-pump water heaters

  • Replacement units for a failed or aging water heater

  • Expansion tanks, T&P valves, and code-required upgrades

  • New venting, gas, and water connections

  • Water heaters for remodels, additions, and new construction

Whether it’s a gas water heater installation, an electric unit, or a tankless upgrade, we confirm the size and fuel that fit your home before we order anything, so the hot water heater we install is the one that actually suits how your household uses hot water.

Signs It's Time to Replace Your Water Heater

Some water heater problems are a straightforward repair. Others are a sign the unit has reached the end of its service life. Replacement usually makes more sense when you notice:

  • Your tank is leaking.

Water coming through the body of the tank means it has corroded through. That can’t be patched, so you need a new unit.
  • Your water heater is past its expected life.

Most tank water heaters last 8 to 12 years, and our hard water pushes them toward the shorter end, so an older unit that’s acting up is often worth replacing rather than repairing again.
  • Repairs are adding up.

Once you’re fixing your water heater regularly, the cost of those repairs can pass what a new, more efficient unit would cost to run.
  • You keep running out of hot water.

If your water heater no longer keeps up with the household, a properly sized new system solves it for good.
  • Rusty water or rising energy bills.

Corrosion inside the tank and climbing energy costs both point to a unit near the end of its life.

If your unit is younger and the failure is a serviceable part, a repair may be the better value. Our water heater repair team can take a look and give you an honest read before you commit to a replacement.

When a Failing Water Heater Can't Wait

Most replacements can be planned. Some can’t. A tank can split and flood a garage, or you can lose all your hot water the day before a houseful of guests arrives. Arctic Air & Plumbing answers the phone 24/7, and when a water heater fails for good, we can get a same-day replacement moving. Call us right away if:

  • Water is pooling or spreading from the tank.

A leak through the body of the tank means it has corroded through and needs replacing, not repair.
  • The tank is flooding a garage, closet, or utility space.

Standing water can reach drywall, flooring, and whatever you have stored nearby.
  • You’ve lost all hot water and can’t wait.

A full house of guests, a new baby, or a work-from-home week doesn’t leave much room to go days without it.
  • The temperature-and-pressure relief valve is releasing water or steam.

That valve is a safety device. A unit that keeps tripping it needs to be looked at now.

If your tank is leaking and you can reach the shutoff safely, turn off the water supply to the heater, then shut off the gas valve or the breaker to the unit. Stay clear of hot water and steam.

If you smell gas, leave the building right away. Don’t flip light switches, use the phone, or do anything that could create a spark while you’re inside. From a safe spot, call 911 or your gas utility’s emergency line, and call Arctic Air & Plumbing once the area is safe.

For an urgent replacement, call (661) 214-8018, or read more about our emergency plumbing service.

Choosing the Right Water Heater for Your Lancaster Home

The right unit depends on your home, not on whatever was there before. We help you weigh a few decisions:

  • Size and capacity.

The right size depends on how much hot water your household uses at once, rather than the size of your old unit. Too small and you run out; too large and you pay to keep extra water hot. We size to your home using the number of people and bathrooms and your peak demand, measured as the first-hour rating and recovery rate. Common tank sizes run 40 and 50 gallons, though the right capacity varies.
  • Gas or electric.

Gas units heat water quickly and usually cost less to run where a gas line is available. Electric units are simpler and a good fit for homes without gas service. We match the water heater to what your home already supports, and if you want to switch fuel types, we’ll explain what that involves before you decide.
  • Tank, tankless, or hybrid.

A standard tank stores and heats a set amount of water and costs less up front. A tankless unit heats water only as it flows, saves space, and lasts longer, at a higher installation cost and with periodic descaling in our hard water. If you’re leaning tankless, see our tankless water heater installation page.
  • Hybrid heat-pump option.

If you want the lowest running cost, a hybrid heat-pump water heater pulls warmth from the surrounding air and uses far less energy than a standard electric tank. Our climate suits one well: a heat pump works most efficiently in warm air, and an Antelope Valley garage stays hot through the long summer, right when the unit runs its best. On the coldest winter days it leans more on its backup electric elements, so the biggest savings land across the warmer months. A hybrid costs more up front, runs on electricity, and needs a bit of open air around it, and it often qualifies for rebates. We’ll tell you whether your garage or utility space is a good fit.

Here is how the three compare at a glance:

Tank, Tankless, or Hybrid: How the Three Compare

Most Antelope Valley homes run one of three types of water heater. Each one heats water a different way, costs a different amount to run, and asks for different care in our hard water.

Use this to narrow the field, then let the house decide: fuel at the location, venting, electrical capacity, and how much hot water your family actually uses at once.

Factor Tank Tankless Hybrid (Heat Pump)
Fuel Gas or electric Gas or electric Electric
Upfront cost Lower Higher Highest
Running cost Standard Lower Lowest
Hot water Limited by tank size Continuous, when sized right Limited by tank size
Lifespan About 8 to 12 years 20+ years with descaling About 10 to 15 years
Space Takes floor space Wall-mounted and compact Floor space plus open air around it
Hard-water care Flush sediment yearly Descale to clear scale Flush yearly; clean the air filter
Rebates Rare Sometimes Often qualifies

Lifespans and costs are typical ranges, not promises. Water conditions, installation quality, and daily demand all move the numbers in either direction.

Not sure which one fits your home? We'll look at your fuel, venting, space, and hot-water habits, then give you a straight recommendation. See water heater installation and replacement or tankless water heater installation.

Do NOT use this company!
A picture is worth a thousand words - please read this and check out my pictures before you call this company! We have been customers of Arctic Air for years and this is the installation they performed at our home. Incomplete wiring, pieces taped in place, instead of fully removing the old unit the new swamp cooler is taped to pieces of the old unit - since this was done on our roof, we might have never known how bad the installation was but it caused a leak in our living room and we’ve been stuck in a nightmare ever since.
If we want repairs done through them then we just need to sign a form releasing them of all liability - would you sign off on a company that performed THIS work to come fix it?
• This was installed 6/6
• Arctic Air performed repairs on the new unit on 6/8 (it was flooding our side yard due to an incorrect valve placement)
• There was a leak in our living room on 6/14 and an Arctic Air tech confirmed it was their responsibility and management would follow up
To date, we are still going back and forth while things stay broken and damaged in our home. Save yourself this trouble!

Thanks for the response Arctic Air - as of 07/08/26, our request was not approved by management. If they have changed their mind, we would appreciate a commitment in writing (via email).

Called @ 4pm with a non emergency repair. My plumbing was completely repaired the very next day. Professional, friendly and a pure delight to work with. In the end I included an annual service. Josh and Jonathan are the best. Being able to trust the work and the people is everything. I understand all the 5 star reviews. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

They just keep getting better! I know it can be difficult in these times to trust companies to truly take care of you, do solid work, all at a fair price, but this company does! Had Joe come out and inspect my A/C unit. He was very thoughtful, complete and accommodating. 5 star is not enough. He gave some great recommendations without any high pressure sales and I am completely happy with adding these features to my home through the best A/C company I have worked with by far. Call them, use them and find trust again! Thank you Joe!

I have used these guys several times and they are great. Highly recommend. Today, Joseph didn't disappoint. He explained everything clearly. Great experience. He warned us about old components that need to be replaced and gave us estimates and the approximate time it takes to complete each job. For HVAC and plumbing I recommend Artic Air.

Jonathan was amazing! I live out of the state so he was in the house without super. He called, texted, and FaceTimed me during work. He took before pictures and provided plenty of videos of his work and sent them to me as things were being fixed. He was very knowledgeable and showed a deep concern for me as the customer. He displayed exceptional customer service and didn’t appear to inflate costs or try to push services that I didn’t need. He was honest and did a great job! Artic Air communicated with me and was able to get my issues resolved within 24 hours of me scheduling the appointment. I would definitely recommend Artic Air and Jonathan specifically!!

I can't say enough about Arctic air! We live way up in the mountains in Tehachapi, and they had no problem coming to our house. They are high-tech, personable, efficient and extremely professional. Both Gabriel and Lazaro were amazing, diagnosed the problem, did some troubleshooting, and took care of everything. They even had recommendations for what to do in the near future. I will not hesitate to call them again or to recommend them fully! Well done guys!!

Miguel was nice but the service itself definitely seemed like a scam. Had I known he wasn’t going to do anything I would have never agreed to pay the $99. He attempted to charge almost $1400 to replace 4 items that cost around $120 for all. He informed me that labor itself was $180. I then asked how much it would be if I aid for the parts separate and just paid the labor. Mind you this was after I paid the $99 and he sent me an invoice that totaled to $522. I don’t see how the labor went up that much when he’s servicing the same parts. This company definitely does not seem like an honest company nor is it reasonable. For that amount I could just buy a new one. I asked for the parts I needed and it literally came out to $120.44 for all 4 parts. I also did review the invoice and there’s no detailed price aside anything. I understand this is a business but this seems beyond unreasonable and a waste a money. I will not be recommending and I hope you learn to do right by your customers.

Our 24 year old wall heater was replaced Dec 22 2025 by Samuel and Miguel. They were on time, finished in shorter time than estimated, clean, professional, and provided lots of answers to our multiple questions.
The gentleman that came out the week before to diagnose the problem gave us same info as the So Cal Gas representative. But, in addition to saying we were fortunate to be alive and should keep the heater pilot off, he came back the next day with a portable heater for our use until new heater could be installed on Monday .
Photos are of clean paper placed from front door to wall heater site

What Goes Into a Proper Water Heater Installation

A water heater is only as good as the work behind it. A proper installation is more than setting the new unit in place and turning the water back on. Here’s what a code-compliant job involves, and why each part matters:

  • Placement and clearances.

The unit has to sit with the right clearances and, on a gas model, enough air to burn safely. We confirm the spot works before anything is set, especially in a tight closet or a crowded garage.
  • Venting and combustion air.

A gas water heater has to vent its exhaust outside. We check the flue and draft so combustion gases leave your home instead of backing up into it. Proper venting is what keeps carbon monoxide and other combustion gases out of your living space, so we confirm it every time.
  • Gas, water, and electrical connections.

We size and connect the gas line and shutoff on a gas unit, or the wiring and breaker on an electric one. On the water side, we use the right fittings to slow the corrosion that hard water encourages where two metals meet.
  • Expansion tank and T&P relief valve.

Water expands as it heats. In a closed plumbing system, an expansion tank and a working temperature-and-pressure relief valve give that pressure somewhere to go. That protects both your new water heater and your pipes.
  • Drain pan and seismic strapping.

We’re in earthquake country, so code calls for seismic straps that keep the unit from tipping in a quake. Where it’s required, a drain pan under the tank sends a future leak toward a drain instead of across your floor.
  • Permit and inspection.

Replacing a water heater in California calls for a permit. We pull it and have the work inspected, so your installation is documented and on record for your insurance and for the day you sell the home.

Skip any of these and you can end up with an unsafe vent, early corrosion, water damage, or a unit that fails inspection down the road. We do it to code the first time.

What to Expect on Installation Day

Replacing a water heater is a job we want to leave clean, safe, and up to code. Here’s how it goes:

  1. Assessment and written quote.

We confirm the right size and type for your home, check the space, connections, and venting, and give you a clear written price before any work starts.
  2. Permitting.

We pull the permits the job requires so the installation is inspected and on record.
  3. Removing your old unit.

We shut off the water and fuel, drain your old heater, and haul it away. You don’t deal with disposal.
  4. Installing the new heater.

We set the new unit and make the water, gas or electrical, and venting connections, along with the expansion tank, relief valve, and strapping or drain pan the code calls for.
  5. Testing and walkthrough.

We fill and check the system for leaks, confirm it’s heating correctly and venting safely, then show you how to operate and get the most out of your new unit.

A standard tank replacement is usually done in a few hours. Switching fuel types, relocating the unit, or converting to tankless takes longer, and we’ll tell you what to expect before we begin.

What a New Water Heater Costs

Water heater replacement cost depends on the unit and your home, so we won’t throw out a number over the phone that turns out to mean nothing once we’re on site. A few things drive the price:

  • Size and type of the unit, from a standard gas tank to a high-capacity or tankless system.
  • Fuel, since gas, electric, and switching between them each involve different work.
  • Code upgrades the installation may need, such as an expansion tank, updated venting, a drain pan, or seismic strapping.
  • Labor for your specific space, like a tight closet, a garage, or relocating the unit.

Once we’ve seen your setup, you get a clear written price for the whole job before we start. A new water heater is an unplanned expense for most homeowners, so financing is available to spread a replacement over time.

Protecting a New Water Heater From Antelope Valley Hard Water

A new water heater is an investment worth protecting, and in Lancaster that means planning around the water. The same hard water that wore out your last tank goes to work on the new one from day one, leaving sediment in the bottom of a tank and scale on tankless components.

Flushing the tank periodically and keeping an eye on the anode rod is the simplest way to reach the full service life of the unit.

If you’d rather cut the scale at the source, we also install water softeners and whole-home filtration. Both ease the wear on your water heater and every other appliance on your plumbing. We’re glad to walk you through what makes sense for your home when we install your new heater.
