Is Your Heat Pump Showing Signs It Needs Repair?

Below are the symptoms our HVAC technicians get called out to diagnose and repair most often:

  • Not heating, or not cooling. The system runs but the air doesn’t change temperature: warm when it should be cooling, or cold when it should be heating. That’s often the result of a refrigerant leak, a failing compressor, or a stuck reversing valve.
  • Stuck in one mode. The heat pump will cool but not heat, or heat but not cool. That usually points to the reversing valve or its control.
  • Ice on the outdoor unit that will not clear. A little frost in winter is normal. A unit caked in ice that never defrosts points to a defrost control or a refrigerant problem.
  • Running constantly and never catching up. When a heat pump runs nonstop without holding the temperature you set, a worn part or low refrigerant is usually behind it.
  • Short-cycling. The system switches on and off every few minutes without finishing a cycle, which wears parts out fast.
  • Backup heat running all the time. If your auxiliary electric heat keeps kicking in, the heat pump is not keeping up, and your bill climbs.
  • Won’t turn on at all. No response from the thermostat usually points to a capacitor, contactor, control board, or an electrical fault.
  • Strange noises or smells. Grinding, buzzing, or a burning smell when the system starts all warrant a look.
  • Tripping the breaker. A heat pump that keeps tripping the breaker is drawing too much power, and it should not be ignored.

If any of that sounds like your heat pump, it is worth a call before it fails completely. The sooner we take a look, the more likely we’ll be able to keep your heat pump in good shape.

Good news: keeping our cool when yours gives out is kind of our whole thing. Arctic Air is born and raised in the Antelope Valley, and for over a decade we’ve been keeping  homeowners comfortable with repairs that last. We knock out most heat pump repairs in a single visit, and if it’s an emergency, our line stays open around the clock.

Emergency Heat Pump Repair, Day or Night

A heat pump does not pick a convenient time to fail. It goes out on the hottest afternoon of the summer or the coldest night of the winter, right when you need it most. When your home is climbing past comfortable or dropping toward freezing, waiting for business hours is not always an option, so we keep our line open 24/7 for emergency heat pump repair. Situations we treat as urgent include:

  • No heating on a freezing night or no cooling during a heat wave, especially with young children, older adults, or anyone with health concerns at home.
  • A system that shut itself down, is smoking, or smells like something is burning.
  • A breaker that trips every time the heat pump tries to start.

Call and we will get an HVAC technician to you as fast as we can, often the same day, and give you a straight answer on what it takes to get your home comfortable again. The price we quote is the price you pay.

Do NOT use this company!
A picture is worth a thousand words - please read this and check out my pictures before you call this company! We have been customers of Arctic Air for years and this is the installation they performed at our home. Incomplete wiring, pieces taped in place, instead of fully removing the old unit the new swamp cooler is taped to pieces of the old unit - since this was done on our roof, we might have never known how bad the installation was but it caused a leak in our living room and we’ve been stuck in a nightmare ever since.
If we want repairs done through them then we just need to sign a form releasing them of all liability - would you sign off on a company that performed THIS work to come fix it?
• This was installed 6/6
• Arctic Air performed repairs on the new unit on 6/8 (it was flooding our side yard due to an incorrect valve placement)
• There was a leak in our living room on 6/14 and an Arctic Air tech confirmed it was their responsibility and management would follow up
To date, we are still going back and forth while things stay broken and damaged in our home. Save yourself this trouble!

Thanks for the response Arctic Air - as of 07/08/26, our request was not approved by management. If they have changed their mind, we would appreciate a commitment in writing (via email).

Called @ 4pm with a non emergency repair. My plumbing was completely repaired the very next day. Professional, friendly and a pure delight to work with. In the end I included an annual service. Josh and Jonathan are the best. Being able to trust the work and the people is everything. I understand all the 5 star reviews. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

They just keep getting better! I know it can be difficult in these times to trust companies to truly take care of you, do solid work, all at a fair price, but this company does! Had Joe come out and inspect my A/C unit. He was very thoughtful, complete and accommodating. 5 star is not enough. He gave some great recommendations without any high pressure sales and I am completely happy with adding these features to my home through the best A/C company I have worked with by far. Call them, use them and find trust again! Thank you Joe!

I have used these guys several times and they are great. Highly recommend. Today, Joseph didn't disappoint. He explained everything clearly. Great experience. He warned us about old components that need to be replaced and gave us estimates and the approximate time it takes to complete each job. For HVAC and plumbing I recommend Artic Air.

Jonathan was amazing! I live out of the state so he was in the house without super. He called, texted, and FaceTimed me during work. He took before pictures and provided plenty of videos of his work and sent them to me as things were being fixed. He was very knowledgeable and showed a deep concern for me as the customer. He displayed exceptional customer service and didn’t appear to inflate costs or try to push services that I didn’t need. He was honest and did a great job! Artic Air communicated with me and was able to get my issues resolved within 24 hours of me scheduling the appointment. I would definitely recommend Artic Air and Jonathan specifically!!

I can't say enough about Arctic air! We live way up in the mountains in Tehachapi, and they had no problem coming to our house. They are high-tech, personable, efficient and extremely professional. Both Gabriel and Lazaro were amazing, diagnosed the problem, did some troubleshooting, and took care of everything. They even had recommendations for what to do in the near future. I will not hesitate to call them again or to recommend them fully! Well done guys!!

Miguel was nice but the service itself definitely seemed like a scam. Had I known he wasn’t going to do anything I would have never agreed to pay the $99. He attempted to charge almost $1400 to replace 4 items that cost around $120 for all. He informed me that labor itself was $180. I then asked how much it would be if I aid for the parts separate and just paid the labor. Mind you this was after I paid the $99 and he sent me an invoice that totaled to $522. I don’t see how the labor went up that much when he’s servicing the same parts. This company definitely does not seem like an honest company nor is it reasonable. For that amount I could just buy a new one. I asked for the parts I needed and it literally came out to $120.44 for all 4 parts. I also did review the invoice and there’s no detailed price aside anything. I understand this is a business but this seems beyond unreasonable and a waste a money. I will not be recommending and I hope you learn to do right by your customers.

Our 24 year old wall heater was replaced Dec 22 2025 by Samuel and Miguel. They were on time, finished in shorter time than estimated, clean, professional, and provided lots of answers to our multiple questions.
The gentleman that came out the week before to diagnose the problem gave us same info as the So Cal Gas representative. But, in addition to saying we were fortunate to be alive and should keep the heater pilot off, he came back the next day with a portable heater for our use until new heater could be installed on Monday .
Photos are of clean paper placed from front door to wall heater site

Heat Pump Systems We Work On

Heat pumps come in a few different setups, and we repair all of them. Whatever you have and whoever installed it, we can work on it.

  • Central (split) heat pumps. The whole-home systems with an outdoor unit and an indoor air handler, the most common setup in valley homes that run on a heat pump.
  • Ductless mini-split heat pumps. Ductless systems that heat and cool specific rooms, common in additions, garages, and older homes without ductwork.

We service all major brands, common or not, including Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, York, Bosch, Rheem, American Standard, Amana, Fujitsu, and Frigidaire.

Why Heat Pumps Work Overtime in the Antelope Valley

A heat pump out here has a harder job than almost anywhere else, because it works both seasons. Our summers run long and hot, with weeks of triple-digit afternoons that keep the system cooling for hours at a stretch. Then winter nights drop into the 30s and below, and the same system turns around and heats the house. A cooling-only air conditioner or a furnace gets half the year off. A heat pump runs close to year-round, so its compressor, motors, and reversing valve rack up far more hours.

Desert dust piles onto that. Fine grit and wind pack the outdoor coil and clog the filter until airflow drops and the system strains to move the same air. Long run times and a coil full of dust are a big part of why heat pumps out here tend to need repairs sooner than the label would suggest.

Repair or Replace Your Heat Pump? An Honest Answer

Most of the time a repair is the right call, and we'll never talk you into a new system just to pad a ticket. But because a heat pump runs year-round, it wears faster than a system that only cools, and there's a point where repairs stop making sense. Here's how we weigh it with you:

What We Look At Usually Repair Usually Replace
Age of the system Under about 10 years 10 to 15 years or older
Cost of the fix Minor part, well under a new system Compressor or reversing valve: a large share of replacement cost
Refrigerant type R-410A, still widely available to service Phased-out R-22, or R-410A getting costly to recharge
Repair history First real repair A repair every season
Energy bills Steady Climbing for the same comfort

If the numbers point toward replacing, we'll walk you through your options honestly. If a repair is smarter, we'll fix it and leave the replacement conversation for another day.

How We Diagnose and Repair Your Heat Pump

A lasting repair starts with the right diagnosis. A heat pump has more moving parts than a cooling-only system, so finding the real cause instead of guessing is what separates a fix that holds from a repeat visit. When our HVAC technician arrives, we run a full diagnostic: we check the refrigerant charge, test the electrical components, inspect the compressor, coils, and reversing valve, and run the system through both a heating and a cooling cycle. Then we explain the issue, using plain language to describe what’s wrong and what it will take to fix it before any work begins. We perform a wide range of heat pump repairs, including:
  • Refrigerant leaks and recharge. We find the leak, repair it, and recharge the system to the correct level.
  • Reversing valve problems. The valve that switches the heat pump between heating and cooling, and a common reason a system gets stuck in one mode.
  • Compressor and capacitor faults. From a failed start capacitor or contactor to a struggling compressor, we repair the parts that make the system run.
  • Defrost control and coil issues. Faulty defrost boards and sensors, and dirty or frozen coils that rob the system of performance.
  • Fan motor and blower repairs. The motors that move air across the coils and through your home.
  • Thermostat and control faults. When the system reads or responds to your settings incorrectly.
  • Auxiliary heat problems. Electric backup heat that will not come on when it is needed, or runs when it should not.
We stock most common parts on our trucks, enabling us to complete most heat pump repairs in a single visit.

Keep Small Problems from Coming Back with Regular Maintenance

Because a heat pump runs all year long, a yearly tune-up makes sense.

A tune-up cleans the coils, checks the refrigerant charge, tests the reversing valve and defrost cycle, and flags any worn parts that may need replacing. If you find yourself calling for an expensive fix every season, regular maintenance might be the answer you’re looking for.
